MARK LEWIS
Lives and works in London, England
BIOGRAPHY
Born in Hamilton, Canada in 1958, film-based media artist Mark Lewis now lives and works primarily in London. Lewis began his career as a photographer, but his interest turned to the cinema in the mid-1990s. Through his films, Lewis takes the formal devices of the cinema as subject matter, often subverting these techniques by illustrating their artifice. His works also explore the banal depictions of everyday life and often times hint subtly at the underlying tension in social interactions. He has had solo exhibitions throughout Europe and Canada and his work is held in a number of prestigious museum collections. In 2009, he represented Canada at the Venice Biennale. Lewis currently teaches at Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London and additionally is co-founder and co-editor of Afterall – a research and publication organization located at Saint Martins College.
